Happy New Year – I’m Back

Sorry for the lack of posts over the past month. We were really busy before Christmas and then i went on my first paid holiday over Christmas in 8 years! Yep 8 years. So we are back now for another of photography and learning. Sorry i don’t post as many updates as i used to but i will try my best to keep the updates coming. To make this post worth while, here’s a bunch of photographs from our holiday. I usually keep my personal life away from my professional life but in this instance, we crossed over.

We spent our holiday on the Gold Coast. Great place, lots to photograph if your willing to get up early and travel. I wanted to shoot these photos in a more lifestyle way than i normally do. Late last year we had to shoot a few lifestyle campaigns and i wanted to shoot this the same. Very “off the cuff” style, a few out of focus, tilt shift work, fun happy colourful images. I also got out of bed early and shot some landscapes but with no filter kit, it was hard. Here are some that i liked. Hope you enjoy the images and lets look forward for another year..

Travel Photo Mondays – Caloundra, Queensland

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today i’ll take you back to this photo i shot of Ryan Williams. Ryan is the worlds best at rider a scooter. He just came back from another tour with Nitro Circus on the mega ramp. I shot this photo earlier this year for his French Toast Magazine profile. This the biggest air ever recorded on a scooter to date. I knew it would be a strong shot for his profile and being his local park, we needed at least one photo from here.

I have photographed him airing this quarter pipe a few times before so this time i thought i’d take a new angle on it. Most of the time, shooting this angle of an air can make the image a little flat but this quarter pipe is very enclosed so angles are limited. I chose this angle as i could get a little foreground blur and still have some quarter pipe to tell the story of what he was doing. I included the before photo on this one as i wanted to show how busy the frame was when i photographed. With any action sport, i never change the position of the rider or what obstacle they are riding but i do agree with cleaning up the frame and taking away any distractions that take your eye away from the trick itself. In this case, all those poles and lights in the back ground were a real distraction for me, so they disappeared. The photo went full page and was definatly a milestone in the sport.

I used 3x580ex’s, 2 from the left of frame and one from the right which you can see in the before.

Travel Photo Mondays – San Francisco, California

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

What more can say, Kevin Yee is a legend. This was shot in downtown San Francisco in the underground. Very risky shot but Kevin wanted it. Security was everywhere and the whole place was surrounded by camera’s but sometimes you just have to rush it and walk away with the shot. I only had time to drop down one flash walk around and shoot the trick. Kevin wall rode as high as he could and came down fakie. Shot with my Canon 5D with one 580ex flash.

Travel Photo Mondays – Brisbane, Australia

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today we not traveling far at all. I shot this photo back in 2010. Sam is a beast of a skater and it’s his B/day this week. I actually used to teach Sam in our skating lessons when he was much younger. I left the country for a few years then bam! he hit a growth spurt and his skating improved 10 fold. He attacks everything he skates with speed and confidence and this spot was no different. Small bank to long rail at Mt Gravatt. I love the colours in this images and of coarse his killer style. Shot with my Canon 5D, 3x 580ex’s flashes triggered by PW’s. Some Brisbane photographers may this spot well according to the sign on the left!!

Happy Birthday Sam!!

Travel Photo Mondays – London, UK

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today is London. I had a few people i knew come to London from Australia while i was there but not many skaters. I found out Hayden Watt was coming for a week and I was very excited. He was visiting friends and i tried to meet for a shoot as Hayden is a really good skater and i knew he brought his skates. So like most days I organised a shoot it was bad weather. It rained a lot and we only got to hit this one street spot out in the open before we had to head undercover for the rest of the day. Living somewhere and getting to know all the skate spots is a real advantage in our sport. I came across this spot a few weeks before and Hayden was staying right near here and i knew it was worth a shot. It didn’t take Hayden long to hit this nice back-backslide on this gate. Due to the bad weather, it made for a very moody shot so i had to light it with my 580Ex flashes and i used my 15mm fisheye on my canon 5D.

Travel Photo Mondays – Glasgow, UK

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today i thought i’d take you very far from Australia to Glasgow, UK. We traveled there to cover a skate competition for a weekend while living in London. Really nice place but hard to understand the accent. Chaz Sands hosted this competition at his local skatepark and invited everyone from around to world to come. Now i don’t like covering competitions. It’s really hard to get the right angles you want, setting up flashes can be a nightmare and capturing that one awesome trick almost never happens unless you set it up like this one. Being Chaz’s local park, he ruled this place with tricks no one else could get the speed for including this huge wall ride out of the bowl.

While everyone else was watching and shooting from where they where standing, i organised with Chaz to hit this trick. I set-up and moved into position that would make this look amazing, right up next to him. I shot this with my trust 15mm fisheye to capture all the on lookers and the tell the story of where he came from to get up this high on the wall. I was really limited for flash placement having 2 flashes to right of frame,(where everyone else was standing). Gave the thumbs up to Chaz and then boom, here’s the finished shot.

One thing i have learned over the years, if you want the shot that no one else has, take control of the situation, control the light and walk away with that unique shot and that’s what sets you out from the pack. I was also lucky enough to have Krisztina with me on this adventure to snap a BTS shot of me out the on ledge creating this shot..

Travel Photo Mondays – Stuttgart, Germany

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Back in 2007 we had a great time road tripping around Europe and we hit Stuttgart. We met some awesome skaters and oh yeah and some amazing spots. From what i can remember, this is a winery, right next to the loading docks at the entry to the building this ledge was begging to be skated. Hulio laced this perfect misfit right off the end. Everything came together in this photo. I was struggling with my light as the ambient light was dropping was and no one was landing tricks but just like any skating, it’s takes a couple of hits to get it perfect and when it all comes together, you get a sick photo like this one. Shot on my trusty Canon 5D with my Sigma 15mm fisheye lens and 3x580ex flashes on PW’s.

Travel Photo Mondays – Dallas, Texas

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

A photo popped up this week of Troy on facebook another photographer shot so i thought i’d post one up for our travel photo monday. Spending time back in 2009 in Texas was awesome. All the boys i skated with there just loved skating and were so damn good, Troy included. This place was an old spot for the guys but new for me. Troy did’t take long nailing this huge fishbrain on a fat rail. Shot with my trusty Canon 5D, 70-200 2.8, 3x580Ex flashes.

Travel Photo Mondays – Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today we are visiting the Sunshine Coast. We are not really travelling that far, It’s only about an hr and half from Brisbane where we live but it’s my mates Brendan Bloomfield’s birthday and he probably hasn’t seen this picture. We shot this years ago on my film camera around 2004. A 50D i think. This spot is amazing but it’s pretty secure and we had limited time. Brendan does not stuff around when we used to shoot. He walked up, turned around and royalled the ledge from half way. We did one more shot but then we got booted so he didn’t get a chance to hit it from the top but we walked away with awesome frame. Happy B/day Brendan, I miss shooting with you dude…

Dri Rider Simulated rain shoot

As common followers of my blog may know, i shoot the motorcycle catalogue for Dri Rider Australia every year. We have a great relationship and we push ourselves to produce a better quality product than the year before. I also love pitching new and exciting concepts and see what we can achieve. This is one of the those concepts.

Lots more photos and behind the scene photos after the jump.

Travel Photo Mondays – San Diego, California

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today we visit San Diego California. I had the pleasure of staying there with pro skater Damien Wilson. Such as awesome dude and a great group of guys in Santee. We hit so many spots on my 2 week stay and this was an old hammer Damien was familiar with. He has a few bad falls on this rail in the past so his confidence needed some building but after one or 2 hits he nailed this styled out topacid at full speed. Shot with my Canon 5D, 70-200 2.8 with 3 x 580ex flashes triggered by PW’s.

Finally a personal shoot

As common readers of my blog would know I am now a full time professional photographer working at Fullframe Photographics in Brisbane so I very rarely get time for a personal shoot. Well I made time last weekend with Brooke from the Brisbane Bronco’s Cheerleaders. Brooke’s been going pretty hard on the fitness scene and was very keen to help out on this shoot. She braved getting sprayed with our water bottle at 7am on a Sunday morning with some cold winds. She’s a champion and soldiered on with the shoot. We had her for 2 hours and we went through the shot list we had set for ourselves. Here’s is the main shot from the set. More to come later on. Thanks to Krisztina and Joe for assisting.

I also shot it as a pano, works well for a spread across the bottom of a page..

Travel Photo Mondays – Hamburg, Germany

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today is Hamburg Germany. We stopped here in our tour back in 2007 to visit our good friend Mark Stamer. Mark came to Australia a few years earlier where i met him breifly. This guy has style for miles and really nice dude to go with it. We were walking around town and we found this spot. A glass barrier that was strong enough to grind. Didn’t take Mark long after i set-up and boom. Here’s the shot. Taken on my 5D, 15mm fisheye, 3x580ex’s trigger by PW’s.

Travel Photo Mondays – Phoenix, Arizona

Every Monday I show a travel photo from some of my journeys around the world including local spots in Australia like Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Alice Springs to overseas like Japan, London, Budapest, California, Vienna and the Netherlands.

Today is Arizona. I spent some great time there skating and shooting with James and Gretchen from Revolution skateshop. Mark Wodja came to Arizona to film a section and i was lucky enough to be there at the same time to catch this technical powerhouse doing his thing. The first thing i noticed about Mark was the amount of injuries he had. I saw him change his shirt and amount of scratches and scars on his back was something i’d never seen before. This was a guy who puts his body on the line every time he goes skating.

I photographed Mark for a few days and he came across as a very intelligent hard ass skater who didn’t really worry to much about consequences, as a photographer this was great because his level of skating was amazing.

This was a regular spot for the locals but new for me. This ledge was awesome!. Mark nailed this back royal after a few goes as the late sun came through the buildings.

Mark Wodja, Back Royal, Arizona.

I never thought to much about taking portraits back then but i thought i’d take this quick opportunity as Mark was changing a wheel after he shattered one on his first gap of the day.

Drew Gurian, first assistant to Joe McNally, shares his experiences as a top assistant traveling the world

I found this video from one of my favourites sites ISO1200.com. Joe McNally has long been one of the best photographers in the world. I love his work and his dedication to his work. Drew explains how he landed this amazing job and goes through various photos. It goes for long time but well worth it. Enjoy.
