Dancers + Water = Awesome

So a few weeks ago i had the lovely people from All That Dance around to my place to get wet and try some dance moves. I will admit, this wasn’t originally my idea. I saw it being done in America and new i had to try it. You never know what really goes into a shoot unless you try it yourself. Here’s an early shot of the set-up.

And here’s one of the final shots…

Lots more photos and lots of info on how we did it after the jump…

So basically if you shoot flash through water, you pick up all the water droplets in mid air. With this shot i really wanted show the action and shapes involved in dancing. With some great dancers and cool moves, we created some awesome photos.

Here’s a BTS photo before we got started.

We lined the ground with heaps of black plastic from bunnings and started filling water containers. We were going to fill the dancers clothes and hair with water then get them to perform a dance move and shoot the photo mid action.

Michelle Klekner was on had and was more than happy to throw buckets of water on her students.

These photos are all created with light. Specifically placed flashes shine light through the water and hit the dancers body creating this.

Jumps also work well.

Hair flicks worked the best.

I had to zoom out for this one. Awesome move creating a great affect.

Couples worked amazing, great hair flicking, hehe

This photo is one of my favourites from the shoot. Hair flick, arm movement and leg through the water.

Another amazing couple image. Great flexibility and great water movement through the air.

Michelle’s turn. Her students loved pouring water all over her before cranking out this awesome spin move.

After 4 hours we were winding up the shoot. We used a lot of water and tried heaps of different things to throw water onto the dancers. I wanted Michelle to freeze in a dance move while the water was bouncing off her. Here’s the result.

One of the most important things to remember when shooting with water, your flashes all need to the covered in plastic water tight bags or it will be expensive lesson.

Thanks for reading and i hope you enjoyed this shoot as much as we did.
